LES CEINTES
Summer 2024
Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), in his famous book “Concerning the Spiritual in Art”, issues a call for a spiritual revolution in painting that will let artists express their own inner lives in abstract, non-material terms.
Answering Kandinsky’s call, Chéreau’s artistic journey is not just a means of expression but a spiritual quest to capture emotions and experiences that transcend words. Chéreau's work is deeply influenced by her personal journey of self-healing, resilience, and spirituality.
The series "Les Ceintes”, presented here, is a testament to Chéreau's quest for light. In these white oil palette knife paintings, light prevails over darkness, with shadows lingering but never overpowering. Through layers of white paint, the interplay between light and shadow is revealed, demonstrating how the beauty of light is crafted from the depths of darkness.
These works highlight the essential role of shadows in allowing light to shine, reflecting life's complexities where light emerges from darkness. The title "Les Ceintes," meaning "surrounded" and being a homonym of "Saint," perfectly encapsulates the essence of these paintings, with each piece radiating a sense of being surrounded and embraced by holy luminosity.
For Chéreau, painting serves as a refuge and a vital outlet for moments when words fall short of expressing her inner world.
Marie-Amélie Chéreau is a French contemporary artist and novelist, renowned for her luminous and spiritual palette-knife oil paintings. Her artistic journey transcends mere expression; it is a spiritual quest to capture emotions and experiences that go beyond words. Chéreau seeks to push the boundaries of art, demonstrating that each painting carries energetic vibrations that nourish the viewer.
Deeply influenced by her personal experiences—particularly her journey of self-healing, resilience, and spirituality—Chéreau's work channels powerful energy through her art. Her approach draws inspiration from Impressionist works and abstract painters like Kandinsky and Rothko, as well as the “outrenoir" master, Soulages. A collector once said, “I want her energy in my home." This sentiment captures the essence of Chéreau's unique ability to materialize the invisible. Critic Katrin Grosspeter described her work as “a journey from darkness to light, offering a sanctuary for the soul."
Chéreau has exhibited in Paris (Place Vendôme), Munich (Goldberg Studios), Chicago, Miami, and soon New York. Her paintings have been featured in art publications and are held in private collections. Marie-Amélie Chéreau (b. 1972, Versailles, France). She lives and works in Munich, Germany.
